Hello Ilari,

your explanation is absolutely perfect! Especially concerning commutator and Brushes sparking.

Sparking is not only generated in Motors but also in Pedals caused by wiping a contact across the winding of the wire wound resistor.

You can cut the capacitors for test purpose in older machines for a while. You never should cut the capacitor in more modern machines equipped with electronic pedals. Unlike at pedals, sparks generated from motors means also high voltages. Much higher than the 230V Supply. These high Voltages can damage the Thyristors, Triacs, FET's or whatever the pedal electronic exists of. That's just a general suggestion and my opinion.

Now that you know the purpose of the capacitors, their special requirements and how to change and to Isolate everything, you should change a defective or suspect capacitor immediately against new one.

I hope You can use your knowledge at other sewing machine enthusiasts devices sometimes.
